The Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Dr. Ali Ahmad has pledged the readiness of the House to support the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to ensure that Kwarans embrace the use of speed limit device in order to reduce accidents on the highway.
Ahmad, who noted that introduction of new policies have never been easy particularly in Nigeria, however enjoined the FRSC not to relent in the task of ensuring that Nigeria’s highways are safe for motorists and other road users.
He made the pledge while hosting the Deputy Corps Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Kwara Sector, Udeme Eshiet , who paid courtesy visit to his office.
The Speaker encouraged the Corps to disregard whatever challenges they could be facing in the course of their duty.
Describing the agency as one of the finest in the country, he urged the Corps to sustain their enlightenment programmes to educate motorists on dangers inherent in over speeding.
Ahmad enjoined the agency to see how it could partner with the University of Ilorin on the speed limit device production which he noted would drastically reduce the cost since it will be produced with local contents.
“In years to come, Nigerians would realise and appreciate the policy and other wonderful jobs the agency has been doing to make our roads safe. I salute your courage and tenacity to introduce the policy as it is being done in the developed countries”, he said.
Earlier in his address, the Deputy Corps Commandant,Udeme Eshiet, said the visit was to seek the lawmakers’ support, especially on the introduction of speed limit device as part of activities marking the 2017 4th United Nations Road Safety Week.
Eshiet stressed that it is the belief of the agency that its visit to the House would further raise awareness on dangers inherent in overspeeding and ensure lives are saved.
He noted that more than half of accidents occurring could be prevented if motorists and other road users could obey road and traffic rules and regulations.
